The Big Crunch
Solo show at Cinema Massimo, National Museum of Cinema, Turin, Italy
A Countdown (Fated, Faithful, Fatal)
Video-animation projected at the cinema 10'23'' (continuous loop), 100 limited edition popcorn packets (signed and numbered), graphite drawing on paper 100x140cm for an exterior cinema display case, graphite and pastels on paper 33x70cm for interior cinema poster display case, 2019
The Big Crunch is a cosmological model about the ultimate fate of the Universe, which suggests that the Universe itself will stop expanding and begin to contract until it implodes, as the initial Big Bang did. At the same time, the term “Big Crunch” refers to the sound of crunchy and hot popcorn when you put it in your mouth and consume it.
After settling into the theatre and getting some popcorn to enjoy during the screening, the viewers, are faced with a countdown. The caption above the scrolling numbers prompts them to wait for the start of the next screening. When it reaches 00:00, after four seconds that echo the first frames of the films on celluloid, a new ten-minute countdown appears. “A Countdown (Fated, Faithful, Fatal)” is a reflection on time that urges us to observe and define time itself. It is the absence of an unnecessary movie that directs a spotlight onto the time of lived life.
